Prime Minister Juha Sipilä tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that the new proposal regarding the sick leave will not apply to the care of a sick child.
The government wants the benefit of first day of sickness unpaid when employees fall ill by themselves. The proposal is part of measures which the government plans to use to improve cost competitiveness.
According to Sipilä, the details will be explained in connection with the preparation of the law.
According to information obtained by the news agency STT, the matter will be examined carefully because a similar model in Sweden has been associated with flaws.
The Swedish Social Insurance (Försäkringskassan) which is equivalent to the Finnish Kela pays allowance to parents during sick child care period. The compensation is 80 per cent of the parent’s salary.
The Employment Contracts Act in the country does not oblige employers to pay wages to a parent during child care period. There is however a provision in many collective bargaining agreements to pay wages to employees during the care period.
