A Russian man is suspected of organising illegal entry of asylum seekers into Finland, Finnish Border Guard sources said.

The Lapland Border Guard District at the turn of the week received five applications from asylum seekers arriving in the country without visa from the Russian side across the Raja-Joosepi border crossing point.

Lead investigator Pasi Iittiläinen from the Lapland Border Guard District said the Russian authorities allowed them to cross to Finland because their travel documents to Russia were in good condition.

Iittiläinen, however, did not disclose the nationality of the asylum seekers.

Similar cases at the Eastern border of Lapland are quite rare. Before the recent incident only one case of asylum seeker crossing over the eastern border of Lapland has been reported this year.

In Northern Norway, there have been more crossings and according to Iittiläinen's knowledge, about 150 asylum seekers this year have crossed over to the Norwegian side through the only border crossing point with Russia.

According to Iittiläinen, asylum seekers arrive in the North mostly by taking flights from Moscow to Murmansk. They depart from different locations in Moscow.

The worsening refugee crisis has recently become more profound in Northern Finland. Many asylum seekers arrived especially from Sweden to Tornio in the past week.

Russian side of the border is different since Sweden and Finland are Schengen areas where there are no border checks.
