After a few years of steady growth, the elk population has rebounded strongly in many regions in Finland, says the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK).

MTK has based their statement on information from all over the country and the fact that traffic accidents are on the rise.

According to MTK Forestry Council chairman Mikko Tiirola, it is important that hunters assume their responsibilities and are authorized full-use permits, which allows for hunting elk in their winter grazing areas.

The police have also issued warnings about elk and recommends that drivers be particularly careful in traffic this time of year.

The Western Uusimaa police have stated that this year's number of collisions is in line with last year. There have been 515 collisions with elk reported in Western Uusimaa.
