A conscript was injured on Wednesday afternoon when his firearm went off accidentally in the Syndalen military training area in Hanko.
The conscript sustained wounds in his leg when the accident took place at a shooting range during a training exercise.
The Navy said the male conscript serving at the Uusimaa Brigade was given first aid on the spot and was afterwards taken to the hospital.
The family of the conscript has been informed about the incident.
According to Commander Juha Torkkeli, the injuries suffered by the conscript are not life-threatening and the incident did not pose danger to others.
Torkkeli said incidents of shots being fired accidentally and actually hitting a person are very rare in the Defence Forces. “Personally, this is the first time,” he added.
