The Supreme Administrative Court on Wednesday issued a ruling that Nigerians cannot obtain international protection on the basis of being solely human trafficking victims.

The justification is that the victims can be assured safety by authorities in their countries.

The evaluation of human trafficking victims and their return to Nigeria and Italy took place under different principles.

According to the European Union’s Dublin Convention, the applications for asylum are processed in only one-member state.

The Finnish Immigration Service has taken into consideration a controversial report run by the Finnish language magazine Long Play on Nigerian victims of human trafficking.

The Long Play on Sunday reported that the immigration service had deported Nigerian women who had fallen victim to trafficking and violence back to either Nigeria or Italy.

The immigration service stated that human trafficking is not an automatic ground for obtaining asylum or international protection.
