Fazer, one of the biggest food companies in the country, has announced that it will go ahead with its plan to shut down its bakeries in Hyvinkää and Ulvila in the spring of 2015.

The company on Tuesday said it had completed co-determination negotiations with 146 employees. Half of them are workers at its Hyvinkää bakery while half are from the Ulvila facility.

The employee redundancy will be made five months before the closure of the bakeries.

Before the layoffs, many of the workers will try to find jobs like an alternative placement within the group.

The company said the negotiations were necessary as bread consumption in the country has declined. Furthermore, the number of baking stores has increased while the demand for packaged bread is shrinking, it explained.

Fazer’s other bakeries are located in Vantaa, Lahti, Lappeenranta and Oulu.
