After a long break since 1991, Finland’s only aircraft manufacturer Atol Avion Ltd is ready again to deliver a light sports aircraft (LSA) in July. The Rovaniemi-based company, which resumed production in 2011, has already sold three aircraft in the making and received orders for 10 more for delivery next year.

Two versions of Atol, Ultralight and LSA, are now in production while the assembly kit of a four-seater model is being planned. Atol’s main structure is made of modern wood composite (birch with PVC foam in between), which is one of its basic strengths. Pine, fabric and composites are also used in the structures.

“Our aim is to manufacture four to five aircraft this year. We will then double the production every year,” Atol Avion CEO and technical director Markku Koivurova told the Finland Times.

Koivurova said, “This two-seater light sports category aircraft is very easy to manage and can operate on land, snow and water. So, it is gaining rapid popularity around the world, even in Rovaniemi. However, it is meant only for hobby, such as fishing, photography and outdoor activities, not for professional purposes.”

The new Atol will be delivered in a special container which can be used as a hangar or a transport trailer that also contains all the aircraft’s fixtures and accessories.

After being re-established in 2011, Atol focused on advanced technology and new, safer models. One such new feature is its advanced wing-folding system. In addition, a number of smaller modifications to improve quality and usability are to be included in the near future.

Toni Ek, quality controller at Atol Avion Ltd, told the Finland Times, “Our aircraft is light but very strong. We use wood composite structure rather than aluminium which is normal these days.”

“The engine is very good and efficient and the maintenance and service cost is very low. The aircraft can fly a thousand kilometres in full capacity on its 140-litre fuel load,’ he added.

The resumption of Atol aircraft manufacturing is good news not only for flying aficionados but also for the local people as it means creation of quality jobs. According to Markku Koivurova, the company needs at least 20 employers and suppliers for next year alone.
