The parliament has given the government the go ahead to sell the state-owned alcohol company Altia.

The decision only provides authorisation of the sale but the final decision on the actual sale will be reached at a later date.

The decision was reached after 98 members of parliament voted in favour of the move against 80 who opposed the sale.

The government is willing to relinquish the ownership of the company because it is not considered a strategic state-owned enterprise.

Furthermore it is believed that the company's growth prospects are higher if it were to obtain capital from the private sector.

The parliamentary finance committee has advised that possible sale of the company should be considered carefully.

There is still possibility that state will remain co-owner of the company. The other option is to list the company in the stock exchange.

The possible sale of Altia has aroused a lot of emotions since it is feared that the change in ownership will jeopardize jobs and will lead to the transfer of the production elsewhere.

The government parties have been asked to give assurance that the jobs will remain in the country before making a final decision on the sale.
