The Finnish shipping company Finnlines has announced that it has began co-determination negotiations with 36 of its employees.

The negotiations concern the company’s maritime personnel operating between Helsinki and Rostock.

The negotiations may lead to workers’ lay-offs or complete termination of the employee contracts.

The company said its operating costs had been unsustainable for a lengthy period.

The company plans to sell its vessels on the Helsinki-Rostock route, claiming that the environment legislation scheduled to take effect from next year would prove costly.

Sulphur directive will lead to an increase in cost for all the fleets operating in the Baltic Sea, according to Tapani Voionmaa, the company’s general counsel.

Voionmaa did not elaborate on the saving target behind the co-determination talks as well as the vessels sale plan, as the negotiation was still in an early stage.
