A law that came into force on Tuesday brought changes to car inspection. As of 1st July, a company providing car-inspection services can offer repair services as well.

In the past, vehicle-inspection stations were unable to engage in other activities involving vehicle operations.

According to the transport safety agency Trafi, the law aims to curb rising prices and increase supply of services and competition.

Keijo Mäenpää, the chair of the Association of Automotive Technical Societies in Finland revealed that prices had already become favourable prior to the change in legislation.

“Competition in the sector would have increased without legislation,” said Mäenpää.

The price of car inspection differs a lot between regions. The price in remote areas is higher because of the smaller number of cars.

Janne Huhtamäki from Trafi said new licences have been issued to stations which will begin to offer repair services besides car inspection.

At the moment, there are about 380 vehicle-inspection stations. In Huhtamäki’s estimation, the number is likely to grow beyond 400 by the end of the year.
