Honey harvest this year was extremely good all over the country, said the Finnish Beekeepers’ Association in a release.

According to a survey by the association, the total honey harvest this year was 2.6 million kilograms or a million kilo more than previous year’s harvest.

In Lapland, for instance, this year’s harvest was three times more than last year. The average harvest this year, according to the survey, stood at 55 kilograms.

Long-term statistics reveal that average harvest is about 39 kilograms. This year, there were a total of 47,000 producing hives, said the association.

According to the association’s executive director, Heikki Vartiainen, the beehives are a level capable of producing as much honey to satisfy the domestic demand.

The harvest questionnaire was sent to a total of 233 beekeepers representing 10 per cent of the members. The response rate was over 69 per cent.
