The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK) and the Central Union of Swedish-speaking Agricultural Producers in Finland (SLC) appealed to Agriculture and Environment Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen for a quick crisis support package for agriculture.

According to producers, support is most needed in investments made and farms cultivated by young farmers.

A group of representatives from the unions met the minister at the Helsinki Airport on Sunday before his departure for EU agricultural ministers’ emergency meeting in Brussels scheduled for Monday.

The producers said many farms are in crisis due to the Russian import ban on food products, delay of support payments, damage to crops and the difficult market situation.

According to the producers, the agricultural ministers have to make a decision to ensure that agricultural aid is availed urgently this year.

The unions pointed out that besides the EU decision, agricultural support calls for a national intervention.

In a statement, the unions said the Finnish government should allocate additional appropriations to compensate losses incurred due to crop damages in afflicted farms and find measures which could be used to lower agricultural production costs.

The producers also stressed that bureaucracy must be eased.

While the EU agricultural ministers’ emergency meeting will be taking place, a huge demonstration of European producers, which also includes the participation of Finnish producers, will be held in Brussels.
