Peracetic acid, used in the production of cellulose, boiled inside the mill.
The situation was quickly brought under control with no injuries. The incident posed no threat to the environment. The accident was apparently due to a malfunction with the cooling system.
“Peracetic acid must constantly be cooled; otherwise, it starts to boil by itself. Last week, we performed annual maintenance at the factor, and apparently the cooling system did not come back online properly,” said Stora Enso spokesperson Taisto Saari to STT.
