Minister of Economic Affairs Olli Rehn has called for new electricity transmission connections from northern Sweden to Finland.

At the moment, the transmission connections between Finland and Sweden are not enough.

“Nordic countries’ cooperation in electricity markets has to be strengthened in order to exploit to the fullest the rapid growth of renewable electricity. This especially requires strengthening of transmission connections between Finland and Sweden,” Rehn said.

The issue of transmission connections was brought to the table during a meeting of the Nordic energy ministers in Copenhagen.

During the course of the meeting Rehn met with Swedish Energy Minister Ibrahim Baylan.

The lack of sufficient connections is reflected in the cost of electricity. According to Nord Pool, the area price of electricity in Finland on Tuesday was 34.11 euros per megawatt hour, while in Sweden the price was 24.35.

Sufficient transmission connections would lead to the same price of electricity in Finland and Sweden.
