Finance Minister Alexander Stubb on Thursday said the government labour package will create 52,000 new jobs.

The minister made the remarks in reply to queries from lawmakers of the opposition parties Vihreä liitto (Green League) and Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) during the question-answer session in parliament.

According to the opposition lawmakers, the package is only meant to slash the income of ordinary employees.

Stubb, however, said the creation of 52,000 permanent jobs in the private sector would lead to reduction of sustainability gap by half a per cent in the public sector.

The government-proposed changes in the labour sector were tabled for consultation in parliament on Wednesday.

The government has proposed having the benefits for the first sick day unpaid, cutting the annual holiday and changing Epiphany and Ascension Day into unpaid public holidays.

Former speaker of parliament and Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland) lawmaker Eero Heinäluoma remarked that employers and employers’ organisations in the free western countries should be able to agree on the wages.

Stubb replied that elected lawmakers in western democracies have to bear responsibility for employment and growth.
