The postal strike kicked off on Thursday at 4pm as announced earlier by the Finnish and Logistics Union (PAU), the union representing postal workers.

The strike began at the capital city region and affected the operation of the postal centre of Helsinki including foreign postal services.

The strike will be felt throughout the country since over half of the country's postal dispatches pass through the Helsinki postal centre.

The national postal corporation Posti had earlier warned that the strike will lead to some delays in mail delivery starting from Thursday.

Meanwhile, PAU will possibly request today other unions under the umbrella of Central Organisa-tion of Finnish Trade Unions -SAK to support the ongoing strike.

PAU Chair Heidi Nieminen said the request had not yet been sent as on Thursday. At least transport workers unions will be requested to support the postal workers strike.

Other unions under the umbrella of SAK have also shown interest in supporting the strike, Nieminen told news agency STT.

Nieminen clarified that that support strike will adhere by the four-day warning period. If the other unions decide to embark on support strike immediately then the measures will be implemented next week.
