Tampere’s cat cafeteria Purnauskis mulls opening another themed cat cafeteria in Oulu, reported the Finnish language daily Kaleva.

Purnauskis operates during the day. The idea behind the cat cafeteria is that the cats live in the cafeteria round the clock. The cafeteria’s customers may stroke the cats while taking coffee and keeping track of their spending.

At night, the condition of the cats and well-being may be monitored via a surveillance camera.

Cat cafeteria entrepreneur Tiina Aaltonen, who was once a resident of Oulu, said they are hoping to expand operations in the north. The plan to open the cat café in Oulu, however, is still in its infancy.

Currently, Aaltonen said, search is on for a person willing to carry out the tasks of being the cat keeper. This requires a person who is an exceptional lover of cats, she said.

Aaltonen emphasised that running a cat cafeteria is binding and requires a lot of work.

She said the difference between a cat cafeteria and ordinary cafeteria is that when it comes to a cat cafeteria, an entry fee is charged. Furthermore, shoes are removed and hands have to be washed before going to the tables.

Aaltonen said, “The majority of the clientele are those who own a cat or a pet. We have stuck a note that people talk to each other very freely about the cats they own and often use, for instance, cat-themed jewellery and bags.”

The cat cafeteria collaborates with Kisu ry, the authority in charge of protecting cats in Tampere region.

At the moment, Aaltonen takes care of orphaned cats at home, which could be a suitable lot for Oulu too, if the cat cafeteria comes to fruition.
