The Director General of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Tero Varjoranta has been selected for the post of the Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said a government press release on Monday.

 Tero Varjoranta will be the head of Inspectors at the IAEA with the responsibility to discourage the proliferation of early use of nuclear weapons.

 Varjoranta will officially assume his office at the beginning of October.

STT adds, Finland was selected for the second time to play the important role within a short time.

Varjoranta lead in his new position as a core material in the control of the Directorate. The IAEA's mission is to promote nuclear technology for the safe and peaceful use, and the Directorate-General is responsible for ensuring that nuclear technology used for military purposes. 

Rejoicing the fresh appointment, Varjoranta said it was a great honor for him, for the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) and for the country as well.

The new Deputy Director will be responsible to keep watch on various contemporary issues like  Iran's nuclear program, the monitoring of the IAEA's latest estimate, the lack of progress over the years. 

He said that the  Iran's nuclear program would be a key area of work for him. 

´´ is especially important to be able to ensure that Iran's nuclear program is entirely peaceful,´´  Varjoranta told STT.

He, however, said that the detail responsibility  of the new assignment could not be told at the initial stage.

´´ In general, I can say that I do not intend to participate in politics, but to focus on the technical issues very objectively,´´ he said.
