Recent frequent accidents in sports aviation have prompted the government to evaluate the risks in the sector.

Minister of Transport and Local Government Henna Virkkunen on Monday expressed concerns at the safety of sports aviation following the Sunday’s plane crash at Jämijärvi which left eight people killed and three others injured.

A risk evaluation of the sports aviation is set to be launched as there have been several serious accidents recently, said Virkkunen.

She termed human causalities in the accidents high and said many of the accidents were related to ultra-light planes whose safety regulations have already been tightened.

The minister, however, called for a balanced approach when looking at legislation.

She said it is important that people can still continue to enjoy the hobby as it is an important and beloved activity for so many people, but, at the same time, safety should be prioritised.

The safety evaluation would be done in close cooperation with the sport enthusiasts in order to make the whole process as balanced as possible, said the minister.

In total, there are about 10,000 aviation sports enthusiasts in the country. Last year, seven people perished in accidents related to general aviation and aviation sports.

Meanwhile, Minister of Interior Päivi Räsänen has said the background and the reason for the Jämijärvi crash must be carefully investigated.

The findings should draw conclusions and ensure that the lessons are learned for the future, said Räsänen.
