The colour of street lights in many towns may soon undergo a slight change in the coming years as the old mercury vapour lamps are replaced by other forms of street lighting.

From next year onwards, mercury vapour lamps will not be sold in the European Union.

Street light poles designed for aging lamps will soon no longer be found everywhere.

Kai Mäenpää, head of maintenance in the municipality of Oulu, says the town does not have enough time to change all the lamps before the sale of mercury vapour lamps comes to an end.

The old lamps will last until the supply in the town’s stores run out, he said.

Oulu and other municipalities in Finland have acquired energy-efficient LED lights which reproduce colours well.

LED lights are also quite expensive, although their prices have eased a little.

Haziness in LED lights is easy to control and, therefore, the towns which have acquired them can save by dimming bright lights instead of switching them off.

The Technical Research Centre of Finland-VTT has also examined LED smart-lights which have been tested in Helsinki. The lights illuminate depending on how much busy is the traffic.
