The European Union has appointed Kirsi Henriksson as Deputy Head of the European Union EUCAP Sahel Mali civilian crisis management mission starting from tomorrow (Saturday), said a foreign ministry press release on Thursday.

The main task of the EU civilian crisis management mission, established in April 2014, is to strengthen the capacity of Mali’s internal security actors including the police, the gendarmerie and the national guard through education, advice and mentoring.

The mission is part of broader efforts by the EU and the international community to support stability in the Sahel region. The mission is in the planning phase and will be launched in spring 2015.

Henriksson has extensive experience of crisis management tasks. She has previously worked, among others, in the Crisis Management Centre Finland and the EUJUST LEX-Iraq mission.

Henriksson is transferred to the EUCAP Sahel Mali mission from the EU's EUBAM Libya border control mission.
