The government on Thursday adopted a decision on the allocation of subsidies of EUR10,666,667 to the political parties of the country  for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for April 19.

The appropriations are intended for the parties' political, information and communications activities and the allocation is based on the number of seats won by each party in the last parliamentary elections, said an official press release.

EUR 5,638,334 of the appropriations is allocated for measures to support the parties' political activities.

A total of 10 % of this amount must be directed to support women's political activities and another 10 % to district organisations. A further EUR 4,975,000 of the appropriation will be targeted to parties' communications activities.

The appropriation to the political activities and communications in the Åland Islands is EUR 53,333.

The ruling National Coalition Party having 44 members in the parliament was granted EUR 1,246,667 for political activities and EUR 1,100,000 for Information dissemination and communications.

The second largest component of the four-party alliance government representing 42 constituencies was allocated EUR 1,190,000 for political activities and EUR 1,050,000 for information dissemination and communications.

The opposition Finns Party having 39 lawmakers received EUR 1,105,000 for political activities and EUR 975,000 for information dissemination and communications.

Another opposition Centre Party having 35 lawmakers in the parliament was granted EUR 991,667 for political activities and EUR 875,000 for information dissemination and communications.

Left Alliance, which has 14 seats in the parliament got EUR 396,667 for political activities and EUR 350,000 for information dissemination and communications.

Green League having 10 lawmakers was granted EUR 283,333 for political activities and EUR 250,000 for information dissemination and communications.

Swedish People's Party of Finland having nine members in parliament got EUR 255,000 for political activities and EUR 225,000 for information dissemination and communications while Christian Democrats got EUR 170,000 for political activities and EUR 150,000 for information dissemination and communications.

Party subsidies have been paid since 1967 and their use is monitored by the Ministry of Justice, the press release added.
