President Sauli Niinistö on Wednesday said the Swedish right and centre right alliance’s leaning towards NATO is not likely to change the country’s policy on military cooperation with Sweden.

The president made the remarks during a visit to the Finnish Defence Forces logistics department in Tampere.

Niinistö was referring to the Swedish government’s stance which states that the country will not apply for NATO membership.

The president said he was pleased since the progress of the defence cooperation between the two nations has been significantly more flexible and faster than he expected.

Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist on Monday announced deepened defence cooperation with the US.

According to Niinistö, strengthening of transatlantic relations is nothing new. Finland is also doing the same.

The president emphasised the close cooperation with Sweden and the fact that a third party could join in. This also applies to the US.

“On the other hand, I am aware that there is a genuine interest in Sweden to develop a dialogue in which Russia would be a partner with Finland,” Niinistö said.

According to Niinistö, it is viewed in Sweden that the Finnish-Russian relation is at a closer level than with Sweden.

In the afternoon, the president met with residents in the Finlayson area of Siperia.
