Minister for Agriculture and Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen has called for measures to step up monitoring of animal slaughterhouses and improvement of animal well-being.

The chair of parliamentary animal protection group comprised of lawmakers Ritva Elomaa and Emma Kari made reference to a footage which appeared in the national broadcaster investigative programme MOT.

“The self-monitoring of slaughterhouses is not working. The supervision has to be rectified immediately to be effective, shortcomings have to be rectified and supervision resources ought to be made sufficient,” Elomaa said.

The Finnish Federation for Animal Welfare Associations (Eläinsuojeluyhdistysten liitto) criticised the actions of Tiilikainen, pointing out that the current government has proved itself to be historically anti-animal protection.

According to the association, the minister had not responded to requests to meet representatives of animal welfare protection organisations.
