Prime Minister Juha Sipilä termed the ongoing refugee crisis a challenge for the Nordic countries and emphasised finding ways to address the root causes of migration in the countries of origin.

Speaking at a meeting of the prime ministers of Nordic and Baltic countries in Reykjavik, Sipilä on Wednesday raised the question of migration in Europe, which is impacting on all the Nordic countries, according to an official press release.

“We all deem it important to implement the EU’s commonly agreed measures effectively. Most importantly, however, we must find ways to address the root causes of migration in the countries of origin,” said Sipilä.

He said the challenges posed by migration are common to all Nordic countries.

“We are working together in a spirit of good cooperation. We will endeavour to further enhance information exchange, for example in terms of good practices in different countries,” said the prime minister, adding, “We are interested in learning, among other things, about the integration policies of other Nordic countries.”

The prime ministers participating in the council also talked about the international climate negotiations, among other things.

They discussed topical northern European issues related to politics and economics. They expressed their concern about Russia’s action in Ukraine and Syria and discussed, for instance, the current situation in Ukraine and Belarus.

The topic of Sipilä’s speech was related to the economic situation in Europe.

In the course of the day, Prime Minister Sipilä met, together with the premiers of the other Nordic countries, representatives of the autonomous areas and the Presidium of the Nordic Council.
