Lindström pointed out that death penalty is a possibility in Iraq and the Finnish law prohibits extradition to a country where criminals face death penalty.

Lindström told the news agency STT that the matter is clear under international human rights treaties, of which Finland is a signatory, and which Finland has explicitly included in legislation.

The Pirkanmaa District Court last Friday remanded two Iraqi brothers who are suspected on reasonable grounds of 11 murders committed with terrorist intent in Iraq in June 2014.

Earlier, a Finnish language daily, Helsingin Sanomat, reported that Iraq may soon demand that Finland hand over the two Iraqi brothers suspected of terrorism in their homeland.

The newspaper said that according to the Iraqi media, the brothers are wanted by Iraqi police and that the Iraqi authorities are preparing to demand the extradition of the brothers.

Finland will not extradite suspects to a country where punishment could include the death penalty. The death penalty is currently used in Iraq.

The refusal of deportation is based on the Finnish constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
