FTimes – STT Report, Jan 21

A case against the director of the Helsinki Design School was heard at the District Court of Helsinki on Wednesday.

The director is accused of cancelling the admission of a deaf student.

The prosecution is demanding that the director be fined for discrimination.

According to the indictment, the school’s director withdrew the student’s admission place when he learned that the student was deaf and that, among other things, the school would need an interpreter.

In addition to the fine, the student is suing for compensation.

The school’s director denies the charges of discrimination. According to the defence, the group of admitted students was already full and unable to accommodate any extra people, including the interpreter.

The student claims he was offered the opportunity to participate in the next starting class.

However, according to the defence, the complainant did not want to be admitted to the next group.

The man applied for and was accepted as a student of graphic design in 2014.
