The fitness of conscripts has dropped to a record low level, reported the Lännen Media, a consortium of Finnish language newspapers.

The Lännen Media report is based on statistics obtained from the Defence Forces.

The statistics show the conscripts ran an average of 2,423 metres in 12 minutes based on the Cooper Test.

Similarly, for the first time in history, results showed the percentage of unfit conscripts to have risen to 25.

The previous rock bottom in terms of conscript fitness was back in 2004 when the average conscript clocked 2,430 metres in the running test.

The fitness of conscripts joining the service has continued to deteriorate since the peak years of 1970s.

During the peak years, the average distance covered by service men based on the Cooper Test was 2,760 metres.

Failure to exercise daily and change in lifestyle habits are the most obvious reasons for the drop in fitness levels, said Major Harri Koskinen of the Defence Forces.
