The police rushed to the scene at about 6.00pm after a gunshot was heard in Kannelmäki.
The suspected perpetrators had already left the scene when the police arrived at the old shopping centre in the area.
The man sustained a bullet wound in his leg but he was not seriously injured, said the police.
The injured man was found at Hämeenlinnanväylä with a handgun in his car.
According to police information, the shooting incident was related to a dispute involving three men. The perpetrators are still at large.
In another incident in Lappeenranta, a man was killed in a traffic accident on Sunday involving a personal car and a lorry.
The accident happened on the national road 6 near Luumäki border at about noon. The deceased was born in 1978. There was none other in the passenger car.
