FTimes- STT Report, Mar 18

Many journalists have received threats or hate messages due to their work, according to a survey by Journalisti-lehti, a magazine for professional journalists published by the Union of Journalists in Finland (UJF).

Every one out of six respondents said they had experienced intimidation in the past two years.

The threats targeted both genders equally. Most of the threats were triggered by topics related to handling of immigration issues.

According to the survey, only a few threats ended up in the hands of the police. Pre-trial investigation was not launched even for serious cases.

The chair of UJF, Hanne Aho condemned the threats, hate speech, vilification campaigns and repression. According to Aho, the prosecutor general has to point out that threats should never be allowed.
