The Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) headquarters is moving from Kuopio to Helsinki, said the Minister of Social Affairs and Health Hanna Mäntylä on Tuesday.

At a meeting of a health and welfare ministerial group, Mäntylä also said that the Kuopio location in the future will focus on the evaluation of drug therapies and the development of pharmaceutical services.

The Fimea office in Helsinki would concentrate on pharmaceutical product licensing and inspection activities, but that Kuopio would also be involved.

A committee on the matter proposed in February that the agency should move its headquarters to Helsinki.

According to a statement of the ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the current solution proposal would avoid staff redundancies and safeguard the operations of the Kuopio office.

Fimea is a central agency under the Social Welfare and Health Ministry, which began operations in 2009.

The Fimea headquarters is currently in Kuopio, but it has offices in Helsinki and Turku.
