Psychological and sex therapist Maaret Kallio has reproved the Finnish students’ newspaper Ylioppilaslehti for sending the therapist a vibrator along with instructions on how to use the sex toy in its latest issue.
The letter to Kallio was published in the Yst. Terv. column of Ylioppilaslehti. Kallio routinely writes about family, life and relationships in a blog published in the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.
According to Kallio, the Lujasti Lempeä (Firmly Gentle) blog gets steady feedback and criticism. However, she finds the feedback and reasoning from the Ylioppilaslehti difficult to understand.
“After working for years as an expert on sexual harassment, abuse and violence, it’s hard to understand the magazine’s journalistic line,” Kallio said.
According to Kallio, the feedback message focusing on female experts on sex and sexuality approaches sexual harassment.
Ylioppilaslehti Chief Editor Antti Pikkanen published a response on Monday. According to him, the accusation of sexual harassment is serious.
“The purpose of the column is humour, criticism or something between the two. More detailed reasons for writing the letter can be found within the letter itself,” Pikkanen wrote.
He said the column has previously been directed to, for example, ice hockey coach Juhani Tamminen as well as Helsinki Deputy Mayor Laura Räty.
