African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui will arrive in Finland today on a two-day visit, said an official press release.

Chergui is schedule to hold meetings with Foreign Minister Timo Soini, the Foreign Minister’s Special Representative Pekka Haavisto, former President Martti Ahtisaari and former Minister Märta Elisabeth Rehn during the visit.

The aim of the visit is to meet with high-level Finnish representatives and opinion leaders as well as to discuss the role of the African Union (AU), the situation on the continent, and mediation.

The AU promotes security on the African continent. Finland has supported the AU's Mediation Support Capacity Project since 2009 by about euro 6.2 million in all.

It is implemented by the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD), based in South Africa, and the Finnish Crisis Management Initiative (CMI).

To date, the project has provided mediation training to nearly 200 African Union staff and compiled an AU mediation handbook. Annually held high-level retreats of special envoys and mediators have also been funded.

They promote the dissemination of information and best practices, networking between key actors for peace and security in Africa, and advancement of regional integration.
