A German flag carrier container ship Ragna nearly run aground after departure from the Vuosaari harbour in Helsinki Monday night, the coast guard has said.

The ship found itself in a dangerous situation when the main engine stopped, causing it to lose manoeuvrability at Kuiva-Hevonen crossroads  in the narrow Vuosaari channel.

The ship, loaded with containers, was rescued by a pilot boat that pushed it out of the rocks and towed it back to the Vuosaari harbour where it is now being repaired.

“The grounding could be avoided because of the pilot boat,” said Jukka Ketonen from the Finnpilot, adding  that it was fortunate that the pilot boat was nearby.

Similar malfunctioning of main engine cause at least a dozen dangerous incidents every year.
