Finland and Estonia have reached consensus on a road map to improve the countries' liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, the Finnish government said in a press release issued on Monday.

Finland and Estonia have agreed to cooperate in the building of an LNG pipeline between the two countries; the construction is expected to be finished by 2019, said Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb at a press conference held after meeting with visiting Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas.

"I am very satisfied that we have reached an agreement. With the implementation of the planned measures, Finland will become integrated into the European gas network and be able to improve the country's gas-based energy security," said Stubb.

He believed that 75 percent of the funding would come from the European Union.

The consensus also stipulates that Finland will build a larger LNG terminal, and Estonia will build a smaller one.

Rovias stressed the importance of building the gas pipeline and the terminals as soon as technically possible.

Roivas will be in Finland on Tuesday and both prime ministers will participate in Slush 2014, a technology and start-ups event held in Helsinki on Tuesday.
