VTT Technical Research Centre on Wednesday announced that it had stopped using the FiR 1 research reactor in Espoo.

According to the news agency STT, it was Finland’s first nuclear reactor.

The reactor was purchased from the United States and was started ceremonially in Otaniemi in 1962, confirmed a release from VTT.

According to VTT, the reactor was originally built for research and education purposes and later modified for isotope production and radiotherapy.

Its use has been phased out, because the reactor has become unprofitable.

The 250 KW TRIGA type reactor designed for use in university environments was transferred from the Helsinki University of Technology to VTT by government decision in 1971.

The reactor will be stopped first to its normal summer shutdown. The security surveillance of the reactor and its premises continues at the same level as during normal use.

VTT aims to apply for government’s authorisation in 2016 for decommissioning the reactor, said VTT.
