Nearly half of Finns are opposed to the construction of a nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki by Fennovoima, according to a survey commissioned by Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

The survey found 48 percent of the respondents opposed to the nuclear power plant project, while 34 percent were in favour. The rest of the respondents were unable to state their position.

Only one fifth of women support the nuclear power plant project, while nearly half of men are in favour.

The nuclear power plant project’s strongest support is in the northern part of the country where the potential nuclear power plant would brighten the economy.

Over a thousand respondents took part in the survey which was carried by TNS Gallup in mid-July when there was a lively debate surrounding Fennovoima's ownership.

The survey by Helsingin Sanomat bore similar results to a survey released by environmental conservation organisation, the Finnish Fund of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Finland) about a week ago in which about half of the respondents were opposed to granting of permit for construction of a nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki.
