The price for permits to ride snowmobiles on public track is going to rise about 50 per cent with the coming of the New Year.

New licences will cost 50 euros, whereas a seasonal renewal will now cost 15 euros.

According to Metsähallitus, the authority that oversees forest administration, the reason for the rising prices is increased costs of organisation of off-road transportation. There hasn’t been a general increase on track permits in 10 years.

The prices for non-off-road permits have also risen. The new processing fee is 50 euros, compared to 40 euros previously.

Metsähallitus uses the revenues obtained from selling permits to improve the quality of snowmobile tracks.

The authority is ending the use of tracks in the worst shape, because they are unable to maintain the safety standards of the tracks.

Off-road snowmobiling always requires the permission of the landowners.

On state lands, snowmobile permits are arranged for off-road tracks.
