Wholesale trade sales went down by 2.6 per cent year-on-year in January 2016 while total trade sales fell by 0.5, according to Statistics Finland.
 
Retail trade sales also declined by 1.2 per cent. In daily consumer goods trade, sales fell by 1.9 per cent while in department store trade sales remained unchanged from the year before.
 
Among the sectors of trade, sales increased only in motor vehicle trade where growth amounted to 8.9 per cent.
 
In wholesale trade, the sales volume declined by 0.7 per cent from January 2015. In turn, the sales volume in retail trade increased by 0.4 per cent.
 
In motor vehicle trade, the sales volume grew by 8.9 per cent year-on-year. The growth was affected by increased sales of new motor vehicles, because Statistics Finland’s data indicate that the number of first registrations of motor vehicles was also 11.1 per cent higher in January than in January 2015.
 
The sales volume grew in total trade by 1.1 per cent, according to the data.
 
Due to fallen prices, the sales volume developed more favourably than turnover in all sectors of trade apart from motor vehicle trade, where the sales volume and turnover increased by the same amount.
