Competition among services offering free cloud storage is set to pick up pace in the summer.

Microsoft storage limit will drop by a third in July. On the other hand, the price of paid Microsoft OneDrive service will fall below its competitors.

One terabyte of storage capacity will cost 7 euros a month, while three other major cloud service offering platforms charge about 10 euros for the same storage capacity.

Cloud services can be used to store a variety of files online. The available space on cloud services act as a substitute for flash drives and external hard drives.

“It was difficult, but a necessary decision in terms of our strategy,” said Vesa-Matti Paananen, consumer product marketing manager at Microsoft in Finland, adding that “The feedback has come through various channels. I understand the situation and regret the decision for the customers who have been upset in their minds.”

Paananen pointed out that the decision affects only a small portion of free OneDrive version users.

The news agency STT did not reach the representative of Google to comment on the future of the company’s Drive service.
