Incumbent Green League (Vihreä liitto) chief and Environment Minister Ville Niinistö and Lasse Miettinen have been elected the chairperson and general secretary of the party for the next two-year term.

The party councillors elected their leaders on Saturday in a convention held in Espoo.

Although Niinistö was elected party chairman unopposed, Miettinen was elected general secretary by defeating two other aspirants – Sallamaari Muhonen and Timo Juurikkala.

Miettinen bagged 200, Muhonen 127, and Juurikkala 45 of the total 372 votes cast in the polls.

The 37-year-old Miettinen from Turku is now working as the special assistant to the minister of the green group and discharging duties as the coordinator of the party with the team of advisers on government policy.

Leaders of the Green League, one of the six components of the ruling alliance, at the convention criticised some government activities but expressed their optimism to stay in the government showing various grounds.

Pointing out the reasons for staying in the government, the leaders said the party chief, Ville Niinistö, had already achieved most of the goals he had promised as an environment minister.

‘We have to understand that Finland is the only country in Europe which has managed a big adjustment budget narrowing down the income gap and ensuring the basic security of the people,’ said Niinistö.

The party leaders in their speeches also focused on the government activities on forest, the Baltic Sea, improvement of life standard, environment, agriculture etc.

Niinistö expected that the government would take decision regarding the Youth Guarantee before approving the next supplementary budget and decide no later than that for additional financing of the Youth Guarantee.

He also pointed out the same-sex marriage issue, which is expected to be placed before the parliament again as citizens’ initiatives have already collected adequate number of signatures for placing a bill from citizens’ platform.
