Local forces will be created in the army to form a part of the national defence under the reforms in the defence forces starting from next year.

The army leadership presented the new army model on Monday in Mikkeli. The new forces will largely be comprised of reservists and will make up one-fifth of the 150,000-strong army.

Currently, the national defence is comprised of operation forces and regional forces.

Finnish Army Commander Lieutenant-General Raimo Jyväsjärvi named the shrinking of age group, ageing of materials and the economic situation as the reasons for embarking on the reforms.

“The army has obligation to save 130 million euros,” said the general, adding that the number of troops will be reduced by 40 per cent in a couple of years.

Every region will have at least one local battalion but the exact number is subject to military confidentiality. The forces can also be customised to undertake important defence missions.

The reservists in the local forces will have the opportunity to rise to the highest ranks in the leadership positions.
