The government on Thursday nominated former prime minister Jyrki Katainen as Finland’s candidate for post of commissioner in the next European Commission, said an official press release.

The term of the current Commission will end on 31 October, 2014.

At the June European Council, the European Heads of State or Government adopted the decision proposing Jean-Claude Juncker to the European Parliament as candidate for President of the European Commission.

The European Parliament is to vote on his appointment on 15 July. Candidates for the new Commission will be selected after that.

According to the Treaty on European Union, the members of the Commission shall be chosen on the ground of their general competence and European commitment from persons whose independence is beyond doubt.

In their duties, the members of the Commission are to promote the general interest of the Union.
