The government has placed a proposal in the parliament for adoption of the Domestic Workers Convention of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the repeal of the Act on the Employment of Household Workers.

Repeal of the Act would bring household domestic workers within the scope of employment rights protection with other workers, said a press release of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

The directive of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the working time would also be implemented.

The regular working hours of household domestic workers would be shortened from 9 hours to 8 hours in a 24-hour period unless regular working hours of 9 hours had been agreed when the Act comes into effect.

The general agreement will come into effect one year after the Director-General of the ILO has registered Finland's ratification. At the latest, the legislative amendments will come into effect at this time. The ratification requires Parliament's approval.

The aim of the ILO is to improve the status of household domestic workers worldwide. There are as many as 100 million of the domestic household workers aged over 15.
