The majority of Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) municipal councillors are opposed to the idea of the country joining military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

According to the news corporation Lännen Media survey, only 7 percent of Centre Party's councillors support joining NATO, while 58 percent are opposed.

However, over one fifth of the councillors support the idea if Sweden applies to join NATO prior to Finland or if the two countries decide to join the military alliance at the same time.

Close to three in four Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland) politicians are against NATO membership.

Over half of Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) politicians are also opposed to joining NATO.

The biggest support for joining NATO came from the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party)-NCP with over 60 percent of NCP politicians in favour of joining NATO.

The result of the survey also shows that Suomen ruotsalainen kansanpuolue (Swedish People's Party of Finland) is another pro-NATO party.

The Lännen Media survey was conducted recentl among 1,200 municipal politicians from different parts of the country.
