FTimes-STT Report, Mar 9

The next parliament may enact a military intelligence legislation within this year, reported Finnish language daily Keskisuomalainen.

This would mean that the military would have powers to intercept foreign governments’ intelligence communications as early as in the beginning of next year.

Keskisuomalainen quoted the Chair of the parliamentary committee on Defence Committee Jussi Niinistö.

Jussi Niinistö in an interview with the newspaper said that based on the preliminary plan, the bill will be completed after the elections in the summer, and afterwards it will go for consultation before heading to the parliament.

Niinistö said the law could improve the safety of Finns involved in crisis management operations.

Presently, the country does not have any legislation on military intelligence.

The issue of the military intelligence was included in a task force report on Finnish intelligence legislation which was released in January.
