The Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman has called on the election commission to ensure that voters on wheelchairs are able to access polling stations.

The Ombudsman found several shortcomings after carrying out surprise inspections at advance voting polling stations.

Two officials from the Ombudsman Office visited the polling stations earlier in the week on Tuesday. One of the officials was also a wheelchair user.

The Ombudsman officials inspected polling stations in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa during the advance voting.

In one polling station, for instance, wheelchair users could not successful access the polling station, and in two other polling stations, voters on wheelchair had to vote at the side of a table without a secured voting booth.
