The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority-STUK has asked for further clarification concerning the under construction Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Eurajoki, reported Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

The reason for the clarification comes after it emerged that Areva, the company constructing the Olkiluoto nuclear plant had detected serious flaws in a similar nuclear reactor in France.

According to news agency Reuters, Areva had found weak spots in the steel of the EPR nuclear reactor it is building for utility EDF in Flamanville, France.

The Deputy Director at STUK's Department of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Tapani Virolainen, however, told Helsingin Sanomat that it was unlikely that similar flaws as those detected in France would be found in Olkiluoto.

The Olkiluoto pressure vessel was manufactured by a Japanese company and not Areva, however, the nuclear safety authority would wish to confirm the matter.

According to Reuters, Areva may have possibly supplied faulty pressure vessels in four reactors, two in China and two in the UK.
