Defence Forces clarify Newsweek report
FTimes – STT Report, May 3

A recent report run by the American magazine Newsweek about Finland calling up reserve troops has moved the Defence Forces to make a statement on its position to the international media.

According to Newsweek, Finland is sending letters to reservists to prepare them for a possible crisis situation.

Defence Forces Chief Communications Officer Colonel Mika Kalliomaa told STT that they will contact the magazine about the justification of sending out the letters.

According to Kalliomaa, the main message to domestic and international media outlets is that the reservist notifications are not related in any way to international situations or military problems.

Kalliomaa admitted that it is understandable to assume that the notifications are related to the prevailing situations around Finland.

Newsweek, though, might be taken with a grain of salt, since, according to its stories, Finland has already formed a government from the Centre and True Finns parties.

These parties are, according to the magazine, pro-defence, but opposed to joining the military alliance NATO. Newsweek predicts that defence spending will see a dramatic increase.

Kalliomaa’s comments were originally made to YLE.
