Cold and rainy weather this year has caused distress to bees in the country which have been unable to properly collect nourishment.

Entomologist Reima Leinonen from the Kainuu ELY Centre said that domestic bee population is facing difficulty and the wild bees flight days have also been scarce.

Leinonen termed the year as bad for the bees, although not a catastrophe.

“If several summers turn out to be bad, the population would look worse. Often the nature corrects itself within a few years," Leinonen said.

The bumblebees have also been scarce. However, the number of bee colonies can only be ascertained late in the summer.

The Finnish Beekeepers Association’s consumer advisor Mari Koistinen said the impact of the weather on bees’ honey production cannot be predicted at the moment.

According to Koistinen, if the sunny weather continues, then towards end of July may turn out in favour of the harvest.

Bee deaths have been reported across the globe. According to Leinonen, they are many causes behind the deaths.

Leinonen revealed that most deaths resulted from use of neonicotinoids pesticides. In addition, there have been parasites and diseases.

The bee deaths in the country have not been on the same scale since pesticides are not used so much.

It cannot be fully established whether problems faced by the domestic bees resulted from pesticide use or other factors, said Leinonen.

Climate change is reducing the population of bumblebees in the southern ranges in Europe and North America, according to a research published in the journal, Science.

The Bumblebees have not been able to relocate to the north where survival conditions are better.

According to BBC which cites the research, the bumblebees may need the help of humans to overcome the challenge of warming.

Bees and other pollinators are vital for food production. The role of bees is important, for example, in the pollination of berries.

Albert Einstein said human will have only fours to live on if the pollinators disappear.
